Have you ever been frustrated by the slow boot times of your laptop. A chronic symptom of the laptop as the boot time increases is that the disk gets horrifically fragmented and the time to load files from disk into memory gets longer. There are a couple of solutions to this, defragment your disk or buy one of the solid state disks that are becoming more readily available.
Conventional disks consist of moving parts. A Particular a disk head has to move backwards and forwards to access the data it needs to. If disk access for multiple programs is occuring at the sametime this means.the disk is constantly runningback and forward. With a solid.state disk all of the access is electronic saving the time taken to retreive data.
The major advantages of ssd is the access speed as well as the reduction in piwer consumption that acts a nice side effect.
When choosing a ssd its important to evaluate the lifespan of the ssd because not all ssd can read and write the same amount of data over their lifetime.
Solid State Disks are.becoming cheaper over.time.and the variety and storage capacity is.also increasing over time.
If your laptop does not support conventional ssd another thing to consider is the use of a usb 3 external hard disk. The benefits of which allows one to boot either internally or externally with the speed of usb 3.
If you are concerned about the reliability of SSD, one option is to mirror them giving additional redujdancy and performance as a tesult of round robin performance.

I am continuously amazed everytime I check out the current SSD price. It seems that this is a technology that has well and truly matured.
With multiple vendors competing on who can supply the cheapest SSD to market the price continues to drop. There are also a remarkable amount of laptops being pre released with Solid state as default such as the macbook air. In the PC realm there are also a wide variety of choices including sony, asus and dell.
I had been looking for memory, for my new macbook pro and on the same page as the RAM there was the price of a entry level SSD for £84. This would have been unheard of a few years ago but it appears that now its really a reality. The size of the SSD was 64Gb but nevertherless, it would still make an ideal boot drive if one were sick of long boot times.
One thing I had noticed recently swapping from pc to mac, is that mac seems to be very memory hungry (either that or I have a lot of things open) and one of the biggest wait types I have is when the Mac OS spends time swapping data out to disk. For a moment when I was searching for RAM i did briefly consider the possibility of buying a SSD instead. After all it was only double the price of the RAM upgrade and would serve to boost times as well as operational performance. Its something I may well consider as my Macbook pro seems to have a limit of 8Gb and there may come a time when this is no longer enough.
